Gamers registered for a Switch 2 pre-order opportunity from Nintendo will get the first crack at a new classic controller. Retro gaming can be expensive, and the wireless Switch 2 GameCube controller will cost $64.99. Fortunately, the accessory functions with more than emulated GameCube games.
Accessory Console Gaming Handheld Launch Retro
A Switch 2 leak with an FCC filing for a mysterious controller immediately excited retro gamers. After illustrations showed a familiar design, many fans expected a new GameCube controller. Sure enough, the April 2nd Switch 2 Direct featured a peripheral designed for Switch Online GameCube games. Nintendo has just announced that the controller's price is $64.99. Also, Switch 2 pre-order offers from Nintendo will include the first opportunity to purchase the accessory.
Starting on May 8th, registered Nintendo account holders may have a chance to reserve the Switch 2. At the same time, these gamers can order the GameCube controller. After May 12th, the accessory will become available to more Switch Online subscribers. The add-on will ship on June 5th, which is also the Switch 2 release date.
There has been confusion about the controller's compatibility with Switch 2 games. A Nintendo Life article suggested that it may only work with classic titles using the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. However, Nintendo clarified that the controller was an option for other games. That said, some issues may arise because of the device's unique layout.
Some gamers find the $64.99 price high, considering it's aimed at emulated GameCube games. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Super Mario Sunshine are two titles that will feel natural to play on the controller. Strangely, while competitive Smash Bros. players still use GameCube controllers, there was no mention of the series at the Nintendo Direct.
Despite its retro appearance, the GameCube controller will connect wirelessly to the Switch 2. Players can also access the Home, Capture, and GameChat buttons found on the Switch 2 Pro and Joy-Cons.
